Green jelly!

This is just one of the many funky foods I encounter.

Bitter melon jelly with sago.

It is as it is, no funky Chinese name no bs name to fool none asians. Bitter melon jelly, now if you don't know what bitter melon (also commonly known as "cool melon") is, it's most probably you're not chinese. It's a vegetable or a fruit(not too sure apparently fruits have seeds and vegetables don't) , looks somewhat like a cucumber with very bumpy skin. It's usually used in Chinese stir fry's, one signature Chinese dish incorporating this would be bitter melon with beef or cool melon with beef.

The melon is bitter, very bitter to the point where it's actually quite refreshing and a "golden" taste. I say golden because that's the translation, I believe that it's english equivalent would be "crisp", so it's got a very crisp taste. My parents still grow this vegetable/fruit in our backyard so I have grown up with the vegetable. I've never liked it, detested it, in fact but it's only up until now where I'm 21 do i actually appreciate it's unique flavor. I only ever have a couple(Literally only a couple, so only 2 slices!) before i find the taste a bit too overwhelming.

So how did this taste?

It's not my kind of dessert. The flavor was much too full on, too crisp, too golden, too pungent. The sago..... was sitting in the bottom of the jelly, now i really enjoy sago and when i dug deep for the sagoit really didn't dull the flavor at all.

All for the fun of foods, you gotta try everything at least once yeh?..... This would be my second time.

Holy Basil in Canley Vale

So a few weeks ago Joey insisted that we must check this place out west. It's called Holy Basil situated in Sydney's west. Quite out of the way and in one of Sydney's most Vietnamese heavy suburbs I was honestly not expecting this. I parked on Canley Vale road and while strolling down the streets, passing shops that had many heavy Vietnamese names i could not pronounce came this busy little restaurant. At first I though it was a new shek modern bar for the young western locals but no, it was indeed what i was looking for.

The drinks we ordered were all fruit juices blends. Very nice actually, there was a list of fruits that we could choose from and we were told that we could choose up to 3 different fruits to be blended into one drink. I got pinapple, watermelon and lychee boy it was good. I could taste each individual fruit and it wasn't too overly sweet too. The other guys also got different blends and each tasting unique and refreshing and also all our drinks were dashed with a leaf of mint, simple, unnecessary but a very nice elegant touch to it.
It did take a little while for the drinks to arrive after we ordered. It also did come out one at a time which meant that the first few drinks that came out got taste tested by everyone on our table. =)

Tom yum soup. I totes forgot the name of this dish. I don't usually get this because I'm scared of the spice, but this wasn't spicy on the throat at all.

Chicken satay skewers. I always get satay skewers cause they are just so easy to eat and everyone loves them, so no one ever complains about getting it. But these ones are a first, I don't want to say this but "OMG" these skewers are by far the best satay chicken skewers I have ever had. Usually people make these skewers thin and so the chicken is most of the time overcooked and dry, and so it's the satay sauce that makes up for it. But here the satay chicken skewers here are a bit pudgy, juicy, tender and plentiful. Amazing!

Vegetarian curry puffs.

Tiger Salad ( I think). This was just a nice warm beef salad, with a hint of chilli. Quite refreshing and despite my fear of chilli sometimes, this was ok. It was only until i didn't eat anything to accompany it did i realise that the salad had hints of chilli in it.
Chicken pad thai. The bean sprouts should of been tossed in together with it but because of a certain someone who dislikes sprouts, we requested it to be put on the side. This pad thai was a bit different to how i would usually have it, the noodles were round/tubular as opposed to the flat long noodles. It was a nice change actually.
Red duck curry. Always a favorite of mine, with the added goodness of not only lychees but pineapples!
Massman Beef Curry. Curry was scrumptious but the serving size i was a bit disappointing, there was only one piece of pumpkin and .. I canot even remember if there were potatoes in it, the cashew nuts was a nice surprise though.

Ox tongue. Not something i would of order, but I'm glad someone did (surprisingly it was the only white guy on our table who did). Grilled lightly, tender and sliced just right.
Salt and pepper calamari. This was a bit disappointing to be honest, they went too heavy on the batter and not enough calamari. It felt like i was just eating over fried batter.

Deep fried ice-cream. Holy ..... shiet this was good. Once again very different to how I've had it before. Instead of sponge cake or coconut shreds protecting the ice-cream they used i think spring roll pastry. Devilishly good!

Black Sesame sticky rice. So good, sticky rice soo filling, the croutons extra kick!

Coconut sticky rice with mango and passion fruit. The mango was a bit unripened and by this time our stomachs was quite stuffed and so the sticky rice was proving difficult to down. Even with that delicious shot of coconut cream on the side.
So at $180 between 5 people makes out to be about $37 pp. It wasn't the cheapest but it was indeed affordable! Not to mention enjoyable too!

CNY is almost over.

Yes, Chinese New year was in the first week of February and it has been long past that week. But for me CNY is full of festivities that go on the whole month. So now it coming up to the last week of Feb and the lion dancing is slowing down about now. Just a few more this Saturday and the next, then after that I'm done for now.

It's been another wonderful fun filled year. In terms of lion dancing, it has had it ups and downs, confusion and stress, last minute mock ups and of course the substantial amounts of sweat that just drip down your face like a leaky tap but in the end it's just the greatest fun and I'm so grateful to be given such an opportunity to experience such a culture.

I have pretty much given up all my spare time to help out in the shows and it's all worth it. Despite how sweaty and tired i get. It's amazing how all this can affect your body. Because of all these shows involving fast explosive actions/moves I've become a fair bit stronger. I'm able to actually able to keep going alot longer and i won't be as exhausted at the end of each show.

It's funny because (yes I know my body actually has no body fat already but) I have lost a bit of weight/fat. On one day my weight actually managed to drop down to 55kgs I think, before the cny festivities my weight could actually reach the 59kgs. And it's really noticeable! People say I jump higher and as vain as this might sound but my muscles are actually starting to look ripped. It's quite unattractive sometimes because my body is so unproportional and it just looks funny. I still refuse to wear singlets out socially though.

I am quite disappointed though, our club doesn't actually a lot of people and it makes organising shows quite difficult. What's even more disappointing though is that there is hardly a time when we have someone spare at hand to help take photos. Very sad about that, I do yearn for photos of each show and videos too.

Things I adore.

I just absolutely adore coming home at an hour unthinkable to most people.

Sneaking in past the front with so many new memories to smile about,
many mosquito bites to boast about and having my eyes about to fall out.
As tired as i may gotten
this shall be something that will be never forgotten.
As i venture of to sleep
I still cant help but smile at this giant leap.

A snippet of the 2011 Twilight parade

A second sneak peak into the parade that's happening this Sunday.

That giant mechanical rabbit is made out of 100% recycled materials. Funnily enough, I think that they actually recycled majority of last years tiger. Top effort though!!
